Adapting to climate change and extreme weather conditions 

 

The UN climate panel predicts a global water level increase of 0.3m - 1.0m up to 2100. With more than two-thirds of the world’s largest cities being coastal delta cities, the vulnerability to rising sea levels and frequent floods as a result of climate change will put millions of people's live hood and socio-economic conditions at extreme risk.

 

Denmark has developed high expertise in areas such as modelling, forecasting and environmental engineering, which form a strong basis for climate adaptation and protecting of coastal areas. Being a flat country, almost completely surrounded by the sea, Denmark has a strong tradition for public-private collaboration on the management and protection of its 7300 km of coastline. This tradition and natural condition has led to expertise in risk assessment of sea and inlet flooding due to expected water level rises, caused by climate change, and the birth of many Danish specialised protective solutions against erosion and rising sea levels.
